Book Report (Book Review) Writing

Buy Essay, Writing TipsOctober 12, 2017alexandra

Book report (review) refers to a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on different parameters. These parameters include the reading’s content, genre and style, merit, validity / reliability, usability and applicability (depending on the genre) and overall impression. Book reviews vary in length and are quite subjective because evaluations are usually made on the basis of personal taste (opinion). As a teaching tool book reviews are assigned to secondary and post-secondary students to help them to develop analytical skills.

The first step of writing a book report is, of course, to read the book. After that it is recommended to organize your thoughts about the reading and make brief notes on the plot. Be sure you have enough information to answer what the topic, strengths and weaknesses, way of reasoning, style and genre, etc. of the book are. Your own or publicly accessible book review questions may serve you as a starting outline for the paper. In the latter case, you can be sure that your book report is complete and covers all the points.

Write your book report in accordance with the following steps. First, summarize the content of the book and indicate its topic and genre. Explicate the main idea of the author and his probable reasons for writing his work. Second, explain the author’s main points on the issue and the way he/she reveals it. How is he/she reasoning? Which arguments are the most convincing and why? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the opinion taken? How does the author follow his/her goals? Discuss the literary devices and the author’s writing style. Point out the peculiarities. Finally, draw a conclusion about the book. Is the topic up-to-date? Is the book impressive enough? How does it change one’s life perception? Does it call for action? Does it result in creating a controversial opinion? How is the book different from other ones in the field? Why is (is not) the author outstanding?

Book report can summarize the whole book or be a chapter-by-chapter summary. Usually, one finishes the book review essay with own opinion about the reading and/or concludes about its contribution to the field of study and practical application.
