For this essay, you should talk about the impact on society of specific communication technology. “Impact” here can refer to cultural, sociological, neurological, or (not and) phenomenological effects or trends in relation to this technology. “Technology” here can refer to any medium of communication (e.g. TV, telegraph, movies, video games, internet, etc.). It can be also a specific type of interaction within that medium (e.g. a particular genre of entertainment, Twitter, etc.).
Whatever you choose in the topic of the impact on society of specific communication technology, make sure that your research question and the scope of your literature review appropriately matches the “size” of your chosen communication technology. That is, if you choose a specific communication technology that is very large such as television, you should be using sources that are looking at television as a whole just like you are. If you are looking at a specific type of TV show (e.g. sitcoms), then the scope of your readings should also be about that type of TV show. Remember, you don’t have to once and for all “solve” a vexing problem in the field. Therefore, simply add your own meager contribution based on existing research and your own understanding and insight.

Structure
Your essay should more or less adhere to the following structure:
Introduction
Briefly summarize the topic, significant issues within that subject, and culminate in a clear thesis statement that indicates what your argument is.
Literature Review
Clarify and describe significant research findings related to your topic, including areas of disagreement, consensus, and/or gaps in the research. Construct these to bolster your argument by backing your claims and providing rebuttals to anticipated criticisms of your position. Stake out your argument in more detail, with continued use of other sources, but with a special emphasis on your own insights about this topic.
Conclusion
Summarize what you’ve said in the essay, and end with a concise expression of the conclusion that you’ve come to base on your research and analysis.
Additional Information
Note that the above is a general guideline for the overall organization of your paper. It is not a suggested layout for sub-sections of the paper. Therefore, you don’t have to have a separate section that says “literature review“. Instead, weave that into the structure of the paper. The final essay is worth 100 points. It will be assessed on its grounding in the relevant literature, organizational clarity, grammar and style usage, and rhetorical artistry. You may adhere to current APA or MLA guidelines for style format. Essays should be roughly 5-7 pages (a little more is okay, but absolutely no more than 10). There should be minimum three scholarly sources.
