College Essay Writing

Writing TipsApril 25, 2017alexandra

College students regularly get assignments related to college essay writing which must show they understand the material studied. The purpose of such college essay writing is to develop analytical skills, critical thinking, and creative writing skills, to learn how to do research and to process and evaluate the material gathered. That is why lecture notes are usually not enough for proper writing of such a paper.

When writing an essay for your college class, argumentative writing skills are required as well as the knowledge about particular essay types, such as book report, case study, museum report, comparison-and-contrast essay, evaluation essay, explication essay, research paper, reaction essay, and many others. However, as all these essay types just explain how to organize the material to be presented, one needs to remain critical and creative during the study process, anyway.

  • Before starting to write your homework essay, it is necessary to:
  • Get familiar with the major requirements of the essay, the topic and the main question in particular;
  • Reread all lecture notes, both handouts and own notes;
  • Read the suggested material;
  • Find additional sources on the issue, i.e. to do a research on the topic (but only to required extent);
  • Find some sources on the essay type required (to get familiar with and to properly understand the format and style requirements);
  • Have a source about correct referencing format (MLA, APA, Harvard, etc.).

After that, it is recommended to think about the thesis statement of your essay and its structure. You can (or have to depending on the essay requirements) make up the outline consisting of introduction, several topic paragraphs and conclusion. It will be your plan when writing the essay.

Now, you can start your free writing. Be sure you finish your introductory paragraph with the thesis statement sentence and start every other paragraph with your topic essay (you’d better choose them for your outline, too). Conclusion paragraph should restate the main idea of the essay (thesis statement) as well as major arguments discussed in the body paragraphs.

Proofread your essay and make sure that all in-text references are formatted correctly. Check sentence structure and make sentences simpler and easier to understand where applicable. Format your bibliography according to the chosen citation style. In-text referencing style must correspond to that applied to the bibliography section.

Finally, take time to forget about your essay and then re-read it again. Imagine you read somebody else’s essay. Do the arguments sound convincing? Does the college essay writing presents enough critical thinking skills of its author and enough creativity? Can you easily follow the idea? If it were a debate, would you feel convinced after you finish your reading? If no, feel free to edit your essay or even rewrite some of its parts. Final draft quality is never achieved during the rough-draft writing.
