Financial Derivatives Research Paper Objectives:

1. Researching a topic and writing about it in your own words using scientific writing
2. Using the literature data bases for research purposes
3. Getting familiarity with some finance journals and understanding financial news

Financial Derivatives Research Paper Requirements:

1. You are required to work INDIVIDUALLY and write a research paper. The selection of the theme of the
   paper should be one of the followings:

• Recent developments in the US derivatives market (a pre-post financial crisis comparison is essential in this case).
• Recent developments in the European market (a pre-post financial crisis comparison is essential in this case with more emphasis on the specific Euro debt crisis).
• State of the derivatives market in the MENA region with the focus on the following points: (I) Where do we stand as MENA region with respect to financial derivatives? (II) are we moving forward? Why or why not? (III) does Islamic finance market help developing the derivative market in this region?
• Use of derivatives in the investments, portfolio management and corporate finance.
• Use of derivatives in the investments, portfolio management and corporate finance with a
  specific focus on MENA or UAE.

2. Each paper should include a minimum of two scholarly Journal articles and three newspapers
   references. You are allowed to use information from any relevant web sources. The more resources you
   use the better your paper will be.
3. Use of library sources is a must in your journal and articles search (rather than simple Google!).
4. Specific examples of products, institutions, strategies, trends, pricing etc. in the derivatives markets
   that you will be discussing will make your research paper richer.
5. All projects will go through the “Safe Assign” feature/filter of BB to avoid any copying & pasting from the web sources/articles. A 20% or more matching will result in a failing grade on this project.
6. I expect you to use the sources to gather information and then write the paper in your own words.
7. In the conclusion of the assignment I want at least one (reflection) paragraph where you explain your
   own interpretation of the issue, any arguments that you want to comment on, and what is the major thing
   that you learnt out of this assignment. Notice that it is more challenging to choose topic 3 & 5 rather than
   1,2 & 4 because there will be much more information available related to topics 1, 3 & 4 compared to 3
   & 5, and hence appreciation will be considered for such cases when grading.
8. Finally, you have to pay attention to grammar and spelling in your write up.
9. The paper should not be less than 3 pages and more than 5 pages (excluding any tables or charts if
   present), with following formatting requirements:

• Font: 12, regular, Times New Roman
• 1.5 line spacing with A4 printing option.

10. At the end of the paper the references should be added in American Psychological Association (APA)
    referencing style.
11. The inclusion of appendices will be appreciated but both references and appendices will not be
    counted among pages count (of section (9)) of the paper.
12. This project will constitute 15% of your total grade.
