Speech writing is a hard task as it should be interesting and persuasive. Unlike essays, speeches should be delivered to the public. Being nervous about the very thought of the audience hinders any brainstorming and makes speechwriting an impossible task… Wait. Relax. Here are the speech writing tips for you!

A good speech is properly structured and has an opening, a body, and a closing. Use the opening to introduce yourself and the purpose of your being there. Appeal and grab the attention; be honest and use humor; engage the interest of the audience with a thought-provoking question or a controversial statement. The opening should not be too long: Once you have won the attention of the audience, your speech should move seamlessly to the middle of your speech.

The body is the largest part of your speech. At this point, your audience is 100% ready to hear your arguments. While writing the body, outline your key ideas (a series of points that you would like to raise) first and find proper illustrations (examples, quotes, etc.) to them. Create logical and smooth transitions between the points so that each point builds upon the previous one. Respect your listeners and do not overwhelm them with countless points.

The closing should contain your strongest material. Use the closing as an opportunity to:

  • summarize the main points of your speech,
  • provide some further food for thought for your listeners,
  • leave your audience with positive memories of your speech,
  • end with a final thought/emotion.

Once you have finished your first draft of the speech, put it down for a couple of days. Your fresh eye will help you improve your style and persuasiveness without extra effort. Repeat improving your drafts (leaving time between each of them) until you are satisfied with the impression your speech creates.
