Research Dialogue Assignment
Purpose:
Research Dialogue Assignment will give you the chance to creatively dialogue about your research topic for another class. The point of this research is to find contextual information that will help you explore and formulate your own approach to your topic and put your own ideas in conversation with your sources.
Step One:
Find at least three professional and/or academic sources that go in-depth into your research inquiry question, each from a different angle. Sites like Wikipedia or Sparknotes arc not acceptable. Also avoid vague, general information articles like, “Immigration in the 20th Century.”
Step Two:
Write a dialogue with participants based on the following four characters:
- Three published writers. Consider how the writers portray themselves in your readings and develop your characters based on these personas. Use quotations from the text to support the characters you’ve created. (Be sure to acknowledge directly quoted language with quotation marks.) You can also paraphrase any information or opinion, or even conjecture some dialogue.
- A student. Base this character on yourself. Keep in mind the rich background of unique knowledge and experience that you bring to the discussion table as you represent at least a decade of reading, writing and thinking Be sure to bring concrete examples into the dialogue.
Step Three:
Correctly format your dialogue.
- Use a “script” style to format your paper. Others should be able to perform your dialogue if they so desire.
- The paper should be primarily dialogue. Other than one paragraph which may precede the dialogue in order to “set the scene,” movement and transitions should occur within the text. Feel free, though, to insert action or stage directions. Each character, including yourself should appear with substantial dialogue (100+ words) at least 5-8 times.
- References should be clearly cited. When you cite a passage or paraphrase from a resource, a page number should follow the sentence in parentheses. Made up lines of dialogue do not require any citation. A Works Cited page should be attached to your dialogue paper following the MLA style of documentation.
